City of Bones

Hi! Today I’m going to do another book review about City of Bones. City of Bones is the first book in its series, The Mortal Instruments. In this book, all the legends and stories are true, vampires, werewolves, faeries, warlocks, and shadowhunters. Shadowhunters are basically human- angel hybrids, and their main job is to protect humans and downworlders from demons. Downworlders are what vampires, werewolves, faeries, and warlock are called.

Shadowhunters have these special marks called runes that they can draw on their skin using special pens. These runes give them special abilities when  fighting demons such as, agility, strength, healing power and many more. The rune they use most often is a glamour rune which makes them invisible to all humans. Only downworlders and other shadowhunters can see them through the glamour.

The main character in this book is a 16 year old girl named Clary Fray and she is a Shadowhunter, but she doesn’t know. Her mother kept it a secret from her all these years because she didn’t want Clary to live that life since it is too risky and dangerous.  So, she ran away with Clary when she was a baby and moved to Brooklyn.

The book starts off when Clary is celebrating her 16th birthday at a club with her best friend Simon. There, she sees three teenagers around her age kill someone, but she doesn’t know that they were shadowhunters killing an evil demon. She gets really scared and starts looking around for help but she realized that everyone around her was acting completely normal like nothing happened. So she runs away from the club. Then she gets a call from her mother who sounded very scared and tells her to run away and not come home. Clary was too worried about her mother so she goes home to save her where she finds a demon and has to fight it. After killing it she faints because she’s too weak and wakes up in a room she’s never seen before. She meets people who say that they know her mother and can help her find her. Along they way, Clary makes new friends and finds out that she has more family that she can imagine.

I really love this series and recommend it to anyone who likes fantasy novels.
